What Camera Should You Buy for Underwater Photography?
GoPro, compact or mirrorless? A working underwater photographer's honest buying advice before you spend a single euro.

We teach underwater photography in Hurghada, and the most valuable lesson often happens before the course: stopping someone from buying the wrong gear. Here is the advice we give our own friends.
First, the uncomfortable truth
The camera matters less than your diving. A stable, relaxed diver with a GoPro will out-shoot a struggling diver with a 5,000 EUR rig every single time. Budget for good buoyancy first - it is free.
Action cameras (GoPro and friends)
Best for: video, wide reef scenes, divers who want zero hassle. Small, tough, and great in good light. Add a red filter for depth and a tray with a handle for stability. Their weakness is stills in lower light and anything macro. If you mostly want moving memories of your dives, stop here and spend the savings on dives.
Compact cameras in housings
Best for: learning real photography underwater. A quality compact in a proper housing is the platform we recommend to most students. You get manual control, RAW files, and the ability to add one strobe - the single upgrade that changes underwater photos more than anything else. This is the sweet spot of price, size and image quality.
Mirrorless and beyond
Best for: committed photographers who already know their needs. Beautiful files, real lens choices (wide-angle and macro), and a price that triples once you add housing, ports, arms and two strobes. Buy this after you know what you love shooting, not before.
Accessories in order of importance
- One good strobe - color and contrast come back to life.
- Tray and arm - stability beats megapixels.
- Red filter (for ambient-light video).
- Wet lenses - add wide or macro ability to a compact without opening the housing.
Our offer
Bring your questions (or your budget) before you buy anything - camera advice is built into our underwater photography course, and we would honestly rather save you from a bad purchase than see you fight the wrong gear underwater.
