Every week someone asks us to guarantee dolphins. We never will, and you should be suspicious of anyone who does. Here is the truth about dolphin encounters near Hurghada.

Where the dolphins actually are

Shaab El Erg, better known as Dolphin House, is a horseshoe reef about an hour north of Hurghada. Its shallow, sheltered lagoon is a resting area for wild bottlenose dolphins. They come to rest, socialize and nurse calves - which is exactly why they are often there, and exactly why they deserve careful behavior.

Your realistic chances

Good, but never certain. Over a season we see dolphins on a clear majority of Dolphin House trips - sometimes a distant pass, sometimes twenty minutes of curious circles around the group. And some days: nothing. They are wild animals with their own plans. The reef itself is a beautiful, easy dive either way, which is why we sell the trip as a great reef day with a strong chance of company.

How we behave around them

• We never chase. Dolphins decide the distance, always.
• No touching, no feeding, no flash photography in their faces.
• We enter the water calmly and let them come to us if they want to.
• If the pod shows resting behavior, we keep the encounter short.

Dolphins that get harassed leave the lagoon - it has happened at other reefs. Respect is not just ethics; it is what keeps Dolphin House alive.

Divers and snorkelers together

The lagoon is shallow and calm, so snorkeling partners and kids can share the same boat day. Divers do two reef dives (75 EUR including lunch and pickup); snorkelers pay less and often get the longest dolphin time, since the pod prefers the surface layers.
