Abu Ramada
Abu Ramada, on the island of the same name south of the Giftun group, is one of the most loved reefs around Hurghada. Divers nicknamed it "the aquarium" for good reason: a wide coral plateau at around 12 to 14 metres wraps the site, broken up by ergs and a big three-peaked pinnacle known as Camel Reef, all of it draped in lilac and purple soft coral. The reef offers a bit of everything. You can circle the ergs at easy depths, wander the labyrinth of the coral garden, or follow the plateau to where it tips over into a steep drop-off. Depths run from a shallow 5 metres over the coral down to 25 metres and beyond on the wall, so guides can shape the dive around the group. Fish life is the star here. Fusiliers pour over the plateau, clouds of glassfish shimmer around the coral heads, and schools of goatfish, bannerfish, sweetlips and masked butterflyfish are everywhere. The moving bait draws in barracuda, big-eye trevally and the occasional passing tuna.
