Gota Abu Ramada

Gota Abu Ramada, known simply as "the aquarium", is the shallow, sunlit little sister of the Abu Ramada reefs and one of the friendliest sites around Hurghada. A single oval coral block sits on a sandy bottom at around 10 to 16 metres, with a scatter of smaller ergs off to the west, and the whole reef can be circled in one relaxed dive. Because it is so shallow and open, light floods the site all day, lighting up the coral and fish in what divers only half-jokingly call permanent golden hour. That, plus the calm conditions, makes it ideal for courses, for newer divers finding their fins, and for photographers. And the fish are extraordinary. Curtains of sergeant majors and bannerfish drift along the coral, rivers of blue-tailed fusiliers sweep past, and schools of sweetlips, goatfish and glassfish gather around the block. Watch the sand for crocodilefish and nesting triggerfish, and keep an eye on the blue for a passing barracuda, jack or turtle.
