Giftun Island

Giftun Island sits at the heart of the marine park just off Hurghada, about an hour by boat, and it is the reef most local divers grew up on. The islands are ringed by coral gardens and dotted with ergs, isolated pinnacles that rise from the sand, each one its own little world of soft coral, glassfish and anthias. The currents that sweep the park feed the reef, which is why the marine life here is so consistently rich. Dives usually run along the plateaus and drop-offs on the sheltered south side, with the sand around 15 to 25 metres and gentle walls falling away into the blue. There is something for every level: relaxed coral gardens for newer divers and long drifts along the wall for those with more experience. Visibility is typically very good and the water stays warm to dive right through the year. Green and hawksbill turtles are regular residents, and you can expect Napoleon wrasse, moray eels, bluespotted rays and clouds of reef fish over the coral. Eagle rays and passing pods of dolphins turn up from time to time, never on schedule, but always a highlight when they do.
