El Fanadir

El Fanadir, whose name means "rocks on top of the cliff", is one of the longest reefs on the Hurghada coast and one of the closest, only about half an hour from the marina. It runs as a long wall on the west side, with a sandy plateau sloping from roughly 12 to 22 metres before the drop-off falls away to the east. The gentle current that runs from north to south makes this a classic easy drift: you let the reef unroll beside you while the guide points out life along the wall. A sheltered lagoon on the southeast corner keeps things calm for newer divers and makes El Fanadir a favourite for night dives too. The wall is full of character. Look for lionfish and well-camouflaged scorpionfish and stonefish, octopus tucked into the coral, several kinds of moray eel, and bluespotted rays on the sand. Schools of goatfish and sweetlips gather along the reef, and turtles or a passing reef shark are an occasional bonus.
