Abu Nuhas

Abu Nuhas is the Red Sea's most famous shipwreck graveyard, a triangular reef northwest of Shadwan that has been catching ships running the shipping channel for well over a century. Four classic wrecks lie along its northern side, close enough that a two-dive day can take in more than one. The Giannis D, a Greek-owned cargo ship that went down in 1983, is the signature dive: her stern and engine room sit intact and atmospheric at around 24 metres, while the midships is a photogenic tangle of steel. Nearby lie the Carnatic, an elegant old sailing steamer now grown over with soft coral, the Chrisoula K or "tile wreck", and the Kimon M, the "lentil wreck", their holds still telling the story of their last cargo. Depths run from a shallow 4 to 5 metres at the bows down to around 28 to 30 metres at the sterns, so this is wreck-course and Advanced territory rather than a first dive. Between the hulls the reef itself is alive with glassfish, lionfish, morays and the usual rich Red Sea coral life.
