Who this course is for
The Advanced Open Water course is for certified divers who want more: more depth, more confidence, more kinds of diving. You need a PADI Open Water Diver certification or an equivalent from another agency, and the minimum age is 12. There is no minimum number of logged dives, and here is our honest advice: taking it early is actually a great idea, because you do all five dives with an instructor beside you at the stage when you benefit from coaching the most.
Why take it in Hurghada
Hurghada is made for adventure dives. Your deep dive happens on a proper Red Sea wall or pinnacle, not a featureless bottom. Your navigation dive runs over coral gardens with natural landmarks that actually teach you something. And for your three elective dives you can choose from real local highlights: a wreck dive at El Mina, a drift along El Fanadir, peak performance buoyancy over the reef, a night dive under the boat, or fish identification at the site guides call the aquarium. Warm water and generous visibility take the stress out of every new experience.
What you learn
There is no exam on this course. Instead, you complete a short knowledge development section for each adventure dive, covering the theory that matters for that specific dive: how depth affects gas narcosis and air consumption, how to run compass patterns and estimate distance, how currents work on a drift, how to plan around a wreck. It is practical, focused learning that transfers straight into the water the same day.
Practical training
The course is five adventure dives over two relaxed days. Two dives are mandatory: the deep dive, where you descend below 18 meters, experience how depth changes your dive and see a narcosis check in action, and the underwater navigation dive, where you master compass headings, reciprocal courses and natural navigation. The other three dives you choose with your instructor based on your interests and the week's boat plan. Every dive counts as a real logged dive on beautiful sites, so the course feels like a great two-day diving trip with skills built in.
Your certification
You finish as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, certified to 30 meters (divers aged 12 to 14 stay within 21 meters). That depth rating unlocks the dives Hurghada is famous for: the wrecks of Abu Nuhas, the walls of Umm Gamar, and day trips to the legendary SS Thistlegorm. It is also a stepping stone: the navigation dive counts toward the Rescue Diver prerequisite, and each adventure dive can credit toward its full PADI specialty course.
