Careless Reef is a striking site about an hour north of Hurghada, built around two big coral pinnacles, the "twin ergs", that rise from a coral garden plateau. The plateau sits at around 12 to 17 metres, then a few fin-kicks to the east the reef falls away in a steep, cave-pocked wall that drops well past 40 metres, which is why this one is reserved for experienced divers. The reef is best known for its moray eels. It is not unusual to see several large morays, some close to two metres long, out in the open among the coral heads, a legacy of the days when guides used to feed them. They are remarkably relaxed around divers and make for wonderful photography. Around the pinnacles the coral is thick with both hard and soft growth and busy with reef fish, nudibranchs and hunting tuna. Out along the wall and in the blue there is always the chance of something bigger passing through, so it pays to look out into the open water now and then.
